2022 vs 2016 makeup: The TikTok trend

Updated: Mar 19, 2022

Recently on TikTok, the 2016 vs 2022 makeup trend has rose to popularity – this shows half your face with your current makeup and the other your 2016 version. Arched brows, carved out cheekbones, bright eyeshadow looks and a full lash are back, with the other side looking dewy, glory and natural. Makeup is always changing. As time goes on, people's needs, expressions and likes change. Different makeup products are launched and new collaborations are always happening.

Many people now look to easy and dewy looks using minimal and natural products after becoming so used to not wearing anything throughout the pandemic. Whereas, in 2016, a matte finish and carved brows were most popular – particularly on Instagram beauty trends were first cultivated. We used to be more experimental with our eyeshadows, using bright colours to create exciting looks. Powdered products took the spotlight, such as the iconic powdered dip Pomade and setting powders was a staples to 'bake'. Now, powdered items are no more and have been replaced. Instead of a matte concealer, it's all about making the skin look as natural as possible with faux freckles and a dusting of blusher. I personally prefer the ease of a natural, dewy look as it doesn't take long to perfect – and I'm definitely on the natural brow hype and would take that over the 2016 arched brows any day. My dry skin never worked well with the popular matte products and I was glad to see the back of them.

I must admit though, I miss the extravagant and creative eyeshadow looks we used to experiment with. This is set to come back, after the influence of Euphoria – not only are they extremely experimental, but they always find a way to incorporate the trends. For those who have watched the series, you will know they're all about the dewy skin and it's clear we've moved on from matte.
