Botox vs filler: A deep dive

It’s no secret that Botox and fillers are everywhere – no longer just a “fix” for wrinkles, they’re now part of the self-care routine for people of all ages. But what exactly are Botox and fillers, and should we really be using them to “prevent” ageing? Let’s break it down.

What are Botox and Fillers?

Botox is a neurotoxin that temporarily paralyses muscles, typically used to smooth out forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines. It works by blocking nerve signals to muscles, preventing them from contracting, which makes skin appear smoother.

Fillers, on the other hand, are injectable substances (usually hyaluronic acid) that add volume to certain areas. They’re often used to plump lips, fill in smile lines and add contour to cheeks. The goal? A fuller, more lifted look that’s a bit different from Botox’s wrinkle-free effect.

The Rise of Preventative Botox & Fillers

The trend of using these treatments in your 20s or 30s as a “preventative” measure is all over TikTok, where young influencers claim starting early helps to delay deep lines and volume loss. The idea is that by keeping muscles relaxed or areas plumped, you prevent wrinkles from setting in. Dermatologists agree that Botox can delay wrinkle formation, but it’s also a commitment (and an expensive one at that!)

Upsides & Downsides

The Upsides: Done well, Botox and fillers can give a natural, refreshed look that lasts several months. Botox is fairly low-risk and non-invasive, with minimal downtime. Fillers can add structure and volume that may make the face look more youthful or balanced.

The Downsides: Botox and filler treatments can be pricey and need regular maintenance. Over time, repeated use of fillers may stretch skin or cause volume irregularities. Botox can lose its effectiveness if used excessively, requiring higher doses for the same results. Plus, there’s a risk of looking “overdone” if not done conservatively – so choosing a qualified, conservative injector is key.

Should You Get It?

Ultimately, it’s about personal choice. Botox and fillers aren’t miracle fixes, but they can be tools for looking and feeling your best. Just remember: ageing is normal, and there’s beauty in embracing every stage of it!
