Eyelash extensions: the do's and don'ts and should you get them?

Eyelash extensions are a treatment I got done for a year and a half straight. I decided to get extensions on my birthday as a treat, and I immediately became hooked.

I loved always feeling great without any makeup on, and not having to faff around with those fiddly stick on strip lashes on a night out. I am going to share my tips for getting eyelash extensions and also why I no longer do.

A full set can range anywhere between £40-£85. You then can get infills every 2-4 weeks ranging between £20-£40. I think it is safe to say that they definitely do not come cheap!

With this is mind, my first tip is to find a technician that is fully qualified and takes their time. The process of getting the extensions requires the technician to use a skin-safe glue to individually apply each eyelash to the lash line. This can take quite some time- mine always took an hour or so. The likelihood is, if they are rushing, they are not securing the eyelashes on well enough, and they may come out extremely quickly after your treatment- they probably wouldn’t look quite so nice either!

My next, and possibly most important tip, is to make sure that you follow the up keep after getting the treatment. The aftercare usually consists of brushing them using a lash brush, which most technicians will give you as part of your treatment. You should aim to do this twice a day.

Also ensure that you do not get the lashes wet for 48 hours after the application, as the glue is still setting. After this period, continue to avoid using oil based products on your eye area, as this can mess with the glue and cause your lashes to fall out- trust me, I learnt this one the hard way. Instead, just use water or you can even buy special cleansers for lash extensions.

So, are they actually worth it? I personally decided to stop getting them. Initially, this was because I realised how much money I was spending on them, but once they were off I also quickly saw how damaged my natural lashes had become. It has taken me nearly two years to get them back to the length and thickness they were before!

Not only this, but I also had really low self-confidence for a while without them as I had become so used to the way I looked with big false lashes all the time. I now realise how ridiculous this is, as we should all love ourselves with and without makeup and cosmetics.

In my personal experience, I highly recommend getting them for occasions or holidays as a treat, however I don’t advise getting addicted like I was- unless you have plenty of cash and super strong eyelashes!
