Turn on your TV and take notes, as we compile the most iconic shows that have influenced fashion and set trends over the years. After a year of binge-watching rather than going out, it’s no surprise that a lot of our inspiration is coming from behind the screen.
For bold prints, pastel pops of colour and denim upon denim, look no further than Stranger Things. This Netflix original sci-fi series transports us back to the trends of the 80s where the clothing was anything but dull. There is a whole scene dedicated to fashion in Season 3, where Max takes Eleven shopping for the latest 80s trends, consisting of a colourful patterned romper, an iconic striped top and high waisted denim shorts. With past trends making a return, none of these pieces would look out of place in today’s society.
Although, it's understandable bright colours and statement prints are not everyone’s cup of tea. If you’re looking for something a little more subtle, make sure to tune into Friends.
Everyone has heard of this 90s American sitcom and with its popularity on the rise again within the younger generation, its fashion trends have also made a comeback. Rachel’s oversized sweatshirt and slack denim dungarees are a staple in my wardrobe. There's also a lot of layering, whether it’s a roll neck, a t-shirt with a jumper, or a dress and a long-sleeved top, it’s always pulled off to perfection. To add a 90s twist to your wardrobe, Friends is the ideal show to draw inspiration from.
Finally, I can’t write this article without mentioning Bridgerton. After becoming Netflix’s most watched show ever, it’s unsurprising that everyone wants to dress like the 'diamond of the season.’ Regencycore is growing ever more popular and corsets are becoming a must-have. Although there are no balls to attend, you can dress a corset up by pairing it with high-waisted jeans as a statement piece (and, of course, with some pearls).
So whether it’s an old era coming back to life or something completely new, I know I’m not alone when I say I can’t wait to see what TV shows will inspire the world next.
