Liberty Belle's guide to AW21 trends

Updated: Oct 8, 2021

It’s been a full academic year indoors and as the new semester begins, autumn trends are back in full swing. As we transition back to in-person teaching and reopened clubs, here's our guide to this year's best autumn trends for Sheffield students.

00s and 70s Revival

Inspiration from the 00s is set to stay with bright colours still trending, despite the end of summer. This means we can repurpose our summer wardrobe for the colder season, such as layering knitted jumpers over summer dresses.

Versace recently paired bright colours with miniskirts, another nod to the 00s – reflecting the season’s focus on fun. After a year of lockdowns, the upcoming seasons will revel in the excitement of going out. Miniskirts are perfect for socials, or during the day if worn with woolly tights.

A current celebrity favourite, Blumarine’s AW21 line, showcases the fur collars and bold patterns that were popular last autumn, meaning we can be sustainable in our outfits.

Bold patterns are also reminiscent of the 70s revival. Most shops, such as Bershka, are currently selling these in all cuts, but they can also be found in vintage shops. Abstract prints make an outfit effortlessly exciting, making them perfect for nights out.

Flares, a university student staple and a personal favourite, are also set to stay. Both flattering and comfortable, they can be a fun change from jeans for seminars or even going out.

Knits

Knits are of course necessary for the colder months, but each year brings new collections and styles. Fendi displayed knits in tight silhouettes this season, showing the versatility of the trend. Tighter knits mimic garments from the Skims line, again, an emerging brand at the moment.

House of Sunny popularised geometric and retro-inspired patterns in knitwear, to the point that Primark sells jumpers in these styles. Whatever your personal style is, there is a piece of knitwear to compliment it.

Neutral Tones

Brown was all the rage last autumn and neutral tones, especially camel, still have their appeal. On the runway, neutral tones have been largely paired with tailored looks, however, as students, we could lend the trend to more casual fits. Shades of beige and brown look put together, creating an effortless look.

Leather

An absolute classic in any AW wardrobe. Not only does it provide a polished look, but also a level of coolness. A leather blazer in particular can be dressed up or down, making it perfect for a student’s wardrobe. They are also a great sustainable option for outerwear as they can be found in most vintage shops.
