Line of Duty: should there be a season 7?

As the BBC One drama comes to a close, now seems like the perfect time to discuss whether Line of Duty really does need another season.

The popular show, created by Jed Mercurio, has been on our screens since 2012, starting us off on our journey with the much-loved characters Steve Arnott (Martin Compston), Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure) and of course Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar).

Given the show’s popularity, it would be a big decision by Mercurio/BBC to not continue the world’s ventures into the world of AC-12 and bent coppers. But after watching so many series of its ilk outstay their welcome, perhaps it’s the brave yet unpopular decision needed. Mecurio is not likely to be short of future options; some would say he’s sucking on diesel!

But just how much diesel is there left to suck on?

Even though this season has done wonders for the BBC’s viewing figures, it seems as though we have been here before. An event happens in episode one, there are weeks of suspicion towards those involved in said event, they end up being caught out and we move to the next season.

As sad as it would be to never hear that iconic theme tune on TV again, there is the possibility of the show not ‘quitting while they're ahead’. Downton Abbey is a prime example of falling victim to the money-making side of things, with a second movie being made when the show should’ve (in my opinion) ended a long time ago.

Let’s be honest, it was never the same after Matthew died.

For Line of Duty, the best-case scenario would be to find out who ‘H’ is in the final episode, have everyone’s storylines wrapped up nicely and allow us viewers to be left feeling satisfied. Hopefully, we are not subjected to another controversial ending similar to Game Of Thrones.

On Sunday, the final episode of Season 6 will undoubtedly come to a gripping close and even though I don’t agree with a Season 7, one thing is certain ahead of the final episode…”Now we’re cooking with gas!”
