Over the past few months I have been intrigued with androgynous fashion. I always felt more on the masculine side of the spectrum, but I never tried to adjust my fashion choices to the way I felt because of the pressure to look feminine and ‘acceptable’. Enough about me, let’s focus on how you can achieve an androgynous yet chic outfit.
Simple trousers are a must! Avoid mid-rise trousers or ones that come up to your waist as you are trying to accentuate hard lines rather than your curves. A low or regular rise waist accompanied with a belt means you can be adventurous with the buckle and add a personal touch to the outfit.
Slim fitting, tank tops are an amazing option for this type of style for two reasons. Remember those hard lines we are trying to create? Tank tops place emphasis on your collarbones and arms, giving you that ‘masculine, athletic’ look even if you have never worked out in your life! A racerback tank top is my go to, although you can play around and see what style looks best on you. If it is too cold, a slim fitting turtleneck will work wonders too. I would encourage you to embrace not wearing a bra but if you do not feel brave enough to do that to begin with, opt for a sports bra over a regular bra.
Your shoes allow you to be inventive. You can choose between the classic all stars and Vans, opt for a more polished look with a pair of oxfords or, my personal favourite, a pair of platform boots which will give you that rockstar edge.
If you are heading on a night out, throw on a fur coat in an intense colour like burgundy or electric blue. You will turn heads while looking ultra-groovy! Now, all you need are some rings and hoop earrings and you are ready to roll.
