As the autumn semester’s first few weeks trickle away, and the lighter nights with them, it’s time to trade sticky summer beer gardens with blankets and hot beverages- and what better way to romanticise your evenings in than with an autumnal movie night? I’ve compiled a collection of my favourite comfort films, perfect for the turn of the seasons. So light your pumpkin candles, get the kettle on and settle down for a cosy evening of autumn viewing!
My first pick is the cinnamon-sweet 19th century classic, Little Women. While both film adaptations are as warm and inviting as each other, Greta Gerwig’s 2019 adaptation captures all the chaos and love intermingled within the female coming of age experience, as well as the biting reality of society’s expectations on women. With a delicate, playful score from Alexandre Desplat, this film can’t help but leave you feeling comforted. Even after Barbie’s tidal wave of success, Little Women still remains my favourite Greta Gerwig movie!
Secondly, it feels wrong to construct a list of autumn/winter films without including Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The first of the powerhouse 8-part series, the inviting world of Hogwarts is the perfect place to spend an October evening, packed with quaint, cosy visuals and loveable characters. The nostalgia of this film for me makes it a perfect pick for this list, adding a magical element to get you ready (and perhaps give you costume ideas!) for halloween.
For my final pick, I’m dipping into the waters of the 'whodunnit'. The Netflix Knives Out series, specifically the first movie, provides all the classic tropes of the genre, including a spooky old mansion house, a host of eccentric (and equally suspicious) characters and a hero detective in the form of a Southern American Daniel Craig. If you want to test your sleuthing skills, this film is a great choice, being equal parts mysterious and endearing.
These picks are the perfect starter pack to bring in the autumn season! I hope my recommendations have inspired you to romanticise your evenings in, and rally your housemates together for a fun night of cosy watching.
