The Kardashian/Jenner Halloween costume controversy

Updated: Oct 8, 2023

There’s no denying that the Kardashian/Jenner clan has gripped the internet ever since their rise to popularity in 2007. Their careers have had turbulent ups, downs, and everything in between. From controversial scandals to mishap marriages, they really have been through it all.

One thing the clan is known for is throwing a good party, often throwing their all into decorations, caterers, and most importantly, outfits. Halloween 2022 was no different. And their costume choice sparked controversies that have capsized the internet.

Kim Kardashian & Kids

Kim Kardashian is arguably the most known of the Kardashian clan and she doesn’t shy away from displaying her kids, whom she co-parents with ex-husband and rapper Kanye West. This year the controversy is focused on Kim’s decision to dress her eldest daughter North, 9, as TLC band member Rozonda “Chili” Thomas.

Sporting a head-to-toe leather ensemble and a full face of makeup, the pre-teen was seen dancing to TLC’s hit song ‘No Scrubs’ alongside two of her friends in a TikTok posted on Kim and North’s shared account. Many fans took to social media to condemn the star for allowing her daughter to dress in a way many deem to be inappropriate and begged her to ‘allow her to be a kid’.

In another post on her Instagram, Kim showed off her 4 children, North (9), Saint (6), Chicago (4), and Psalm (3), dressed in ‘iconic’ costumes as they transformed into Aaliyah, Snoop Dogg, Sade Adu, and Eazy-E. There was an overwhelmingly negative response to these costumes as people determined that her kids were ‘forced’ to dress in such costumes when they probably wanted to be ‘minions’ as one fan joked.

The controversy surrounding Kim’s children begs to question, is it inappropriate for celebrities to capitalise on their children? And has Halloween been destroyed by social media and the desire for likes?

Kendall Jenner

The only childless member of the Kardashian/Jenner clan faced criticism from her 263 million Instagram followers over her own costume choices. As she dressed in a risqué take of cowgirl ‘Jessie’ from Toy Story, she sported an outfit almost identical to that of the 1999 Disney character except she opted for a denim underpant rather than the usual flare jeans.

Commenters decided that this costume made the classic film ‘X-rated’, and deemed it was inappropriate for the 26-year-old supermodel to sexualise a children’s film. Though fellow influencers, such as Olivia Pierson, thought that Kendall’s take on the costume was ‘so cute!!!’.

Kylie and… Kanye?

A different angle of drama was directed at the youngest of the Kardashian/Jenner clan. After posting a TikTok lip-syncing whilst dressed in her Elvira Halloween costume, eagle-eyed fans spotted a figure in the background that resembled Kim’s ex-husband, Kanye West. The supposed sightings of the rapper have been coined as Kylie ‘throwing’ shade at older sister Kim after the pair’s tumultuous divorce over the last year.

Whilst unclear if this person was actually Kanye West, people haven’t held back when theorising Jenner’s motives as she refuses to address the allegations. Is the billionaire subtly shading her sister? Or are fans theorising fictional drama for the sake of it?

Kylie and Kourtney

Both the youngest and the eldest of the clan decided to dress up as the Bride of Frankenstein this Halloween. Fortunately, the pair laughed it off as a lack of communication, but in true internet fashion comparisons of the pair have arisen. Commenters have sparked a ‘who wore it best?’ campaign underneath the posts and others have coined the pair ‘bimbos’ for lacking originality.

It’s safe to say that all the Kardashian sisters have had questionable costume choices. The only sister not facing controversy this year is Khloe. Is the backlash understandable? Or are fans crafting drama out of harmless fun?
