Ways to keep a relationship exciting during a lockdown

It has almost been year since the first lockdown of the Covid-19 pandemic. For many people, this has impacted going out, meeting friends and living our best lives. But what about those who are in relationships?

This past year has seen us discover many creative ways of using FaceTime and Zoom, both extremely helpful services at a time when meeting up with people has never been so hard. This is no different for the world of dating.

Here are 5 ways to keep a relationship exciting during lockdown…

Virtual dates

An easy way to pass the time, virtual dates are a nice way to spend the evening with your significant other. Whether you keep it casual in joggers and get a takeaway, or dig out those heels and wear your best dress, these are never a bad way to make an evening exciting and spend some valuable time together.

Movie nights

Similarly to virtual dates, movie nights are a great way to bond over a particular film. If you’re looking for various different genres, Netflix currently has a vast range of different movies on its streaming site that would be ideal for this situation. Rather than a one-off, scheduling one movie night a week ensures that there’s always something to look forward to.

Work together

Useful during exam season or when you have upcoming assignments, scheduling FaceTime or Zoom calls and keeping yourselves on mute while you work is a lovely way to feel your partners’ presence. This idea was originally suggested by a friend and helps ease any lonely feelings you may be experiencing. Even if you don’t talk, it can help to make that lockdown environment feel more normal.

Plan ahead

Despite there being many uncertainties on when you might next see your significant other, planning ahead and realistically setting out a possible date never does any harm. Mentally, this can help. It is also helpful to plan other things, such as the movie nights and date nights. When the weeks seem so relentless and bleak, it is important to have things to look forward to both on your own and as a couple.

Self love

As important as it is to plan things as a couple, looking after yourself and your own mental well-being is extremely valuable. This could be planning daily walks, movie nights on your own, self-care evenings, taking up a new hobby or simply doing things that you enjoy. Whether you view these as passing the time until you see your partner or not, they all add positivity to an otherwise-bleak lockdown period.
