Wearing makeup at the gym: Yay or nay?

There’s one thing that an intense gym session creates: sweat. While some can make a post-workout look like they’ve just taken a stroll in the park, it is inevitable for most of us to feel a little worse for wear and in desperate need of an everything shower. With sweat comes the question of whether the makeup you applied for that slight boost of confidence has done more harm than good. Therefore, the debate over whether wearing makeup to the gym is beneficial or detrimental continues.

A Boost of Confidence

On one side, wearing some makeup to the gym can provide that extra surge of self-belief needed to push through your next rep. "Looking good makes you feel good" is an old cliché that remains applicable every day. The gym can be an intimidating environment for some; therefore, enhancing your self-image can contribute to a powerful mindset, fostering a sense of control and empowerment.

Thus, while subtle, makeup could serve as the fuel to reinforce motivation and decrease any sense of vulnerability that the gym may evoke.

More Harm Than Good?

While the psychological effects are real, there are significant dangers associated with putting makeup on your skin before a workout.

Dermatologists warn that makeup can interfere with the skin’s functions of detoxifying and cooling down. A small touch-up of concealer might block your skin’s ability to breathe during physical activity. Despite efforts to look good in the short term, this could increase the risk of acne, which may be particularly harmful for those prone to breakouts.

Balance Is Best

The magic of makeup lies in its personal nature; you can be as expressive or natural as you please. When wearing makeup to the gym, you can choose how much or how little feels right for you. If touching up your appearance helps you through the door to work out that day, go for it!

Tactically opting for non-comedogenic products, such as tinted moisturizer and BB creams, and ensuring your skin gets tender loving care at other times can help limit potential damage.

Ultimately, whether you’re pro-makeup at the gym or not, it’s all about balance! Confidence is important, but so is skin health. When the gym feels intimidating, take that step to boost your courage and go work out, makeup or not.
